With the support of the SSLP, a group of Sixth Form students went on a week-long trip to CERN , the nuclear research centre in Switzerland.

There were plenty of revelations:

  • seeing a replica of the large hadron collider (the real one is off limits)
  • the anti-matter detecting satellite
  • the giant magnets

Around 6500 particle physicists do work at CERN. They come from 500 universities and 80 countries. One of the pupils described tha atmosphere: "The centre was like a hub of intelligence and I could feel it pulsing through the building."

But it wasn't all science. The trip to the United Nations building in Geneva was particularly interesting, as was a boat trip down the river.
